CELEBRATING NATIONAL CANDY MONTH: AN EXCUSE TO INDULGE

By Kerri Dean

Did you know that June is considered National Candy Month?  Well it is, and that may just give us the excuse to indulge in some of our favorite treats!  The National Confectioners Association (NCA) is more than happy to help Americans celebrate. From chocolate to gummy bears to bubble gum, there are thousands of options for those with a sweet tooth.

“National Candy Month is a time to revel in this quintessential American manufacturing success story,” John Downs, president and CEO of the National Confectioners Association, said. “For those who enjoy the occasional treat, those who appreciate the strong economic impact of a responsible and fun industry, and for many others, this is a month made for celebration.”

Many of America’s candy companies have been family-owned for generations. These companies not only make the treats we all enjoy, but are also important job creators.  The confectionery industry provides 55,000 manufacturing jobs in more than 1,000 facilities across the country, and has a direct economic impact of $35 billion. For every 1 job that the industry creates in manufacturing, another 7 are supported in related fields like retail, agriculture and shipping.  So, by treating ourselves to some sugary treats, we are supporting our economy and helping to create jobs!

While some of us may need a valid reason to stray from our diets and munch on some sugary delicacies, many need no excuse at all!  Whether you are the occasional indulger or a regular candy consumer, here are some fun ways to celebrate this month.

Try making candy sushi.  If you can’t quite wrap your brain around eating raw fish and seaweed, approach the sushi craze with some sweetness. Instead of seaweed, rice, avocado and raw tuna, this sushi involves some childhood favorites: Rice Krispies, Fruit Roll-Ups, Twizzlers and gummy worms.

Try a different take on basic chocolate chip cookies and substitute M & M’s or Reese’s Pieces in place of ordinary chocolate chips.  Another recipe with an easy substitution is Rice Krispie treats.  Replace regular white marshmallows with Peeps!

Step up your Chex mix by adding Rolos, pretzel M & M’s, jelly beans or gummy bears. A big batch of homemade Chex Mix is perfect for a gathering of friends or in single servings as a daily snack.

Maybe you want to go step further than just eating candy.  Perhaps you want to actually see how some of your favorite treats are made as well as learn the history behind one of the world’s most famous confectioners.  For those die-hard chocolate lovers, Hershey, Pennsylvania (a.k.a. Chocolate Town USA) is your destination!  Attractions include a tour of Chocolate World that explains the process of chocolate production and an amusement park.

There are many ways other ways to celebrate.  Whether you are a candy novice or connoisseur, young or old, observing this sweet month shouldn’t be hard!
